We are delighted to have been able to give our first ever scholarship to Eualia – a 13 year old girl.

Eualia’s mother Macu is a single mother and earns USD150 a month. She lives an hour out of Dili and spends USD2.50 every day (30% of her income) to pay for the bus to and from work.   Macu can’t afford to have Eualia travel into Dili everyday for school so she has lived with her godmother in Dili since she was 6 years old – only staying with Macu on Saturday and Sunday nights.

Eualia was due to start year 10, however Macu was unable to afford to pay the school fees, uniform costs and food costs to keep her at school.

A Melbourne family has offered to fund a scholarship for Eualia – providing AUD3,000 (USD2000) a year for her school and living costs.  They are also paying for her to take English lessons – a life changing skill in Timor.  Eualia has now begun year 10 and her goal is to go to university to become a doctor.

Eualia has also been given her first ever laptop, kindly donated by KB Seafood in Melbourne.

We hope this is the first of many scholarships we are able to offer.
